Wakesurfing in Austin: A Beginner's Guide to Your First Wakesurf Session

Wakesurfing is the water sport everyone in Austin is talking about — and if you haven't tried it yet, this is your sign. Unlike wakeboarding or water skiing, you don't need athletic experience, and you won't spend the whole time face-planting. Most first-timers are standing and riding within 15 minutes. Here's everything you need to know before your first session on Lake Austin.
What Is Wakesurfing?
Wakesurfing is surfing the wave created by a specially designed boat — like our 2025 Moomba Max. Once you're up and in the pocket of the wave, you drop the rope and ride indefinitely, just like ocean surfing. The boat travels at 10–12 mph, the wave is consistent and forgiving, and there's no ocean required. It's arguably the most accessible and fun way to surf anywhere.
Wakesurfing vs. Wakeboarding: What's the Difference?
Wakeboarding involves being pulled at higher speeds with your feet strapped to a board — it's harder to learn and much harder on your body when you fall. Wakesurfing is slower, rope-free once you're riding, and the falls are gentler since you're only going 10–12 mph with no foot bindings. For beginners and anyone who wants to have fun without bruises, wakesurfing wins every time.
Do I Need to Know How to Surf to Wakesurf?
Not at all. Wakesurfing and ocean surfing use different muscles and techniques. Most of our guests have never surfed a day in their life — and they're riding the wave within their first session. Your captain gives a full tutorial before you ever get in the water, covering stance, how to use the rope to get into the wave, and how to drop the rope once you find your balance.
What to Expect on a Wakesurf Charter with Surf Club ATX
You'll meet your captain at Loop 360 Boat Ramp, load up the 2025 Moomba Max, and head out on Lake Austin. Your captain handles the route, music, and coaching. We provide all boards and equipment. Everyone in the group takes turns — while one person surfs, everyone else watches from the back of the boat. Sessions run 2 hours minimum, with longer charter options available.
Private Charters vs. Surf Club ATX Public Sessions
If you want the whole boat to your group, book a Private Wakesurf Charter (up to 10 guests) or a Wakesurf + Party Cove Charter (up to 12 guests). If you want to try wakesurfing solo or as a couple without paying for the full boat, Surf Club ATX public sessions offer $100 per-seat spots on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. It's the most affordable way to try the sport for the first time.
Tips for Your First Wakesurf Session
A few things that will make your first session much better: stay loose and don't fight the rope, keep your knees bent and your weight over your back foot when getting up, look at the horizon not at the board, and trust the wave — it does most of the work. Most people over-grip the rope. Relax your hands, let the boat pull you, and the rest follows naturally.
Where to Wakesurf in Austin
Lake Austin is the best spot in the city for wakesurfing. The water is calm, deep, and free of the chop you get on bigger lakes. The stretch near Loop 360 Boat Ramp runs under the 360 Bridge with limestone cliffs on both sides — it's as scenic as it gets in Central Texas.
